Bhagavad Gita Book Club: Chapter 13-- The Field and the Knower
Overview
With chapter 13, we start the final third of the Gita. We have spent the last chapters discussing bhakti/ devotion after an initial emphasis on karma (action)/jnana (knowledge) and sannyasa (renunciation). The final third will tie everything together in a cohesive whole. This chapter starts that with what is arguably one of the most complex chapters of the text. Krishna goes into more depth differentiating between the knower and the things known—alternatively described as the ksetra/ ksetrajna and prakriti and purusha in the Gita, or Shiva/Shakti in Tantric philosophy. It is the combination of matter and spirit that come together to create the manifest universe. We will re-visit Samkhya philosophy concepts again in greater depth to help us differentiate between our true nature and that of the material cosmos. This philosophy is the backbone of not only Vedanta philosophy but Hatha Yoga philosophy as well.
For those who may be attending for the first time, we are using the Easwaran 2nd edition of the Gita for the study group. Additionally, we have posted videos of the previous sessions on our Facebook Group page. Please sign up and can view the links here:
