Description:
To prepare professionals and advocates working with foster youth to navigate the higher education system by understanding their unique needs, recognizing systemic barriers, and applying youth-centered, strength-based strategies to support long-term academic success.
This session aims to provide guidance on how the transition to college impacts youth—particularly those coming from highly structured and restrictive child-caring institutions. We will explore the unique challenges these students face as they shift from controlled environments to the independence and demands of college life and discuss strategies for supporting a successful adjustment.
Objectives:
1. Understand the unique challenges foster youth face when transitioning from structured care to college life.
2. Recognize key barriers in the college system that impact foster youth success.
3. Use strength-based strategies to support foster youth in adjusting and thriving in college
