About this event

Moderated by Micah Ariel Watson '18

Join Professor Claudrena Harold for a discussion about the role of pop music in protests throughout American history. How can pop music help us understand historical movements? Does music have an effect on the outcome of protests throughout history? How does music foster connections both between people and to a common goal? We'll discuss these questions and answer yours!

Claudrena Harold is the chair of the History department at UVA, as well as a Professor of History and of African American and African Studies. Her forthcoming book is entitled "When Sunday Comes: Gospel Music in the Soul and Hip-Hop Eras". She has also written, produced, and co-directed with Kevin Everson eight short films as a part of her ongoing work on the history of black student activism at UVA. The films have been screened around the world.

Micah Ariel Watson is a 2018 double major (Drama and African American Studies) and recently received her MFA in Dramatic Writing from NYU. She already has a large body of work including films that have been screened at film festivals across the country, multiple award-winning plays, and a web series that is entering the second season of production.
