Join CTC-RI for our August Best Practices in Team Based Care (formerly known as Nurse Care Manager/Care Coordinator Best Practice Meeting): Best Practices in Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Screening for Rhode Island Primary Care Practices

CTC-RI is excited to be hosting the STD/HIV Prevention Training Center of New England for a presentation discussing STI screening, including best practices and updated screening guidelines for common STIs, Rhode Island data on STI screening and prevalence, and discussion of how STI screening is tailored to specific populations at Women and Infants and Open Door Health.

Presenters:

Philip A. Chan, M.D., M.S., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and School of Public Health at Brown University and infectious diseases physician. Dr. Chan is Chief Medical Officer at Open Door Health, the state’s only community-based LGBTQ+ clinic. Dr. Chan also serves as Consultant Medical Director for the Rhode Island Department of Health. He is working with the Department of Health and other community organizations on several statewide initiatives related to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI). Dr. Chan is also a Medical Consultant in the Division of STD Prevention (DSTDP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and assisted in writing the 2021 STI Treatment Guidelines.

Dr. Erica Hardy, MD, MMSc is an Assistant Professor of Medicine, and Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Divisions of Infectious Disease and Obstetric Medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She is the Director of the Division of Infectious Disease at Women & Infants, and the Care New England Health System. She is faculty based in Rhode Island of the Ratelle HIV and STD Prevention Training Center which is a project of the Division of STD Prevention, Massachusetts Department of Public Health and part of the National Network of STD Clinical Prevention Training Centers, funded by the CDC to offer courses and expert consultation to health care providers in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of sexually transmitted diseases and the prevention of HIV. Dr. Hardy is also the Director of the Women & Infants SAFE Clinic, which provides trauma informed medical care to sexual assault survivors, including follow-up on STI and HIV prevention care.

Objectives:

1. Review epidemiology of common STIs in Rhode Island
2. Discuss screening for common STIs in primary care settings
3. Provide updated recommendations on STI care and management in primary care settings

CEU credits will be available for those attending.

The AAFP is reviewing ‘Advancing Comprehensive Primary Care Through Improving Care Delivery Design and Community Health,’ and deemed it acceptable for AAFP credit. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. NPs and RNs can also receive credit through AAFP’s partnership with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB).
