Berkeley Shakespeare Company presents: The Tempest
Overview
One of the final works written by William Shakespeare before he retired from theatre in 1613, The Tempest has captured the imaginations of audiences and the zeitgeist of cultural and societal change ever since its (probable) debut in 1611.
The story of exiled Duke Prospero, his daughter Miranda, and the enchanted island where they live until the duke's magical machinations draw together his enemies and allies alike into a world of intrigue, romance, and miracles, The Tempest has been interpreted as its author's farewell to his art, an early critique of colonialism, a manifesto of radical forgiveness, and a proto-existential allegory for the acceptance of mortality. One of the Bard's most poetic and quotable shows, it takes us on a bittersweet spiritual journey while sparking important conversations about personal accountability, personal sovereignty, and the costs of power and knowledge. Quite tellingly, it has experienced a plethora of recent revivals in the Bay Area.
Berkeley Shakespeare Company brings their own unique twist under the direction of Stuart Bousel, who has adapted the script for an immersive theatre experience at HI Point Montara Lighthouse Hostel. With a new score by Bay Area singer/songwriter Katherine Park who also plays the role of Ariel, this performance offers the chance for audience members to spend the night on location after the show, and will include a chance to talk with the cast and production team, as well as other opportunities to connect and build community.
Please note that there is at least one change of location during the show between the outdoor and indoor performance spaces. Please bring warm layers!
Make the experience even more special - stay the night in seaside accomodations and immerse yourself in the rugged poetry of Shakespeare's world. Overnight guests choose from private or shared rooms, receive priority reserved, padded seats, and can experience exciting, after-hours talkbacks, theater chats, and wine receptions with the creative team of "The Tempest" (including actors, directors, and producers). Show-only tickets available for purchase as well. See below for more information.
