Forest bathing is a calming, inclusive experience designed to help you slow down and reconnect with nature. Set along accessible paths in tranquil woodland, this guided session follows a gentle, unhurried pace with regular pauses for mindfulness, meditation and sensory activities.

Rooted in the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku, forest bathing isn’t about walking fast or far, it’s about tuning into your senses, allowing your mind and body to relax. This session has been thoughtfully adapted to suit a wider range of needs – with shorter distances, more frequent pauses and flexible invitations you can engage with in your own pace and way (please refer to the Accessibility Note further on in this section for more details regarding the session's accessibility).

Spending time in nature in this way offers many mental and physical benefits, including reducing stress, improving mood, boosting immune function and supporting overall wellbeing. As well as inviting you to immerse yourself in the restorative power of nature, this session encourages you to notice the natural world more deeply – helping you grow a sense of connection and mutual relationship with nature.

Whether you’re new to mindfulness, seeking a break from a busy life, or simply looking for a slower, more inclusive way to deepen your relationship with nature, this session is open to all – just come as you are and take the time you need to breathe, be present and feel more grounded.

Ticket holders to this event will receive complimentary day access to the Wallington estate, giving you more time to explore and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Location and Arrival Information

The session will take place in the beautiful woodland of the Wallington National Trust property in Northumberland.

Please meet 10 mins early at the entrance to the house (number 15 on the map below).

Wallington will open at 10am if you wish to make use of the toilet facilities before the event begins. Please note, we will not be able to wait past the start time for latecomers.

What to Wear/Bring

To get the most from your experience, please wear/bring with you:

  • Plenty of warm layers of clothing (the temperature of woodlands is cooler, even in the summer, and we will be moving very slowly and entering our parasympathetic nervous system so it is easy to get cold)
  • Long sleeves and long trousers to protect against stings and bites
  • Waterproofs
  • Sturdy footwear
  • A picnic mat/groundsheet/small folding chair if appropriate for you
  • A non-breakable mug for optional guided tea-drinking
  • Other weather-related essentials (e.g. suncream, gloves, additional warm layers)

We recommend you bring these items in a backpack or similar to keep your hands free to explore!

Please note that if you do not have suitable clothing your guide may decide it is not safe for you to participate in the session.

Accessibility Note

This session has been carefully designed with accessibility in mind. We will be moving very slowly along step-free, accessible woodland paths, with frequent pauses for rest, reflection and sensory activities. The route is short, mostly flat and remains on generally smooth surfaces (consisting of tar & chip). The session will be in East Wood only and we will try to keep to grade 2 surfaces as much as possible - please refer to the accessibility map.

There may be some benches available along the route, and you are very welcome to bring a foldable chair or mobility aid if that would make you more comfortable. Towards the end of the session, there is usually the option to sit or lie down for a longer relaxation activity – this can be adapted to suit your needs.

We aim to create a calm, spacious and non-judgemental environment that is welcoming for all participants, including those with sensory sensitivities or anyone who prefers clear expectations. Invitations to take part in activities are always optional and adaptable and you are free to engage in whatever way feels best for you on the day. You’re also welcome to bring anything with you that supports your experience.

If you have any visual or hearing needs (e.g. would benefit from written prompts or the guide being positioned closer to you), please let your guide know in advance so we can do our best to support you. Likewise, if you have any other specific adaptations or special considerations, or would like to talk through the session in more detail, please feel free to contact your guide via rootedwellbeinguk@gmail.com

Please note that Wallington have reserved a limited number of trampers for use during the session, free of charge. If interested, please call or email the Wallington team at least one week prior to the session.

Please consult Wallington's 2025 accessibility guide, to help you better plan your visit.

Other important info:

No dogs allowed (except assistance dogs).

Whilst forest bathing embraces all rainy, snowy and sunny weather, it may be necessary to alter or cancel an event if it is not safe to proceed – this is most likely in the event of high winds or thunderstorms.
