Description:
Watercolor doesn’t have to be intimidating! Want to try watercolor before you invest in supplies? Then this is the class for you. This 4-part series of classes will demystify painting with watercolor. This is a nuts and bolts, information packed class. You will learn the tools and techniques to control the paint and water enabling you to be more successful with your future forays into watercolor painting. This can also be a good brush up class if it has been a while since you have taken a watercolor class or if it has been a while since you have painted with watercolors. This is a 4-part series of classes. Select one Option for a set of four classes. If you attend one set of 4, the other Options are all repeats, so do not sign up for those but you can take any of Laurie’s other watercolor class offerings.
NOTE: If there is a certain date within the series package that you cannot attend, contact the instructor (before signing up) for other options such as attending a different week for that particular class or a discount for attending only some of the dates.
Week I: Paper – The paper used for watercolor can be very important. In this class you will get the opportunity to get to learn about and try different kinds of watercolor paper and how to use it. You will learn how to stretch watercolor paper to eliminate warping. You will also learn some of the first basic watercolor techniques. You will learn wet on wet, wet on dry, graduated wash, lifting, blending, and other techniques. There will be an in-depth discussion about the materials such as paper, brushes and paints. You will learn the basics of watercolor such as washes, graduated washes, blending colors, wet-on-wet technique, wet-on dry technique, lifting color as well as other techniques. You will learn a fun way to make clouds and finish up with a little scene using some of the techniques learned in this first class.
Week II: Brushes – This class will be all about brushwork. The first part will be talking about types of brushes that may be used for watercolor with discussion and demos. For this class we will practice different mark making with our brushes to learn how to control the water and the paint. We will learn how to make leaves and petals, grasses and ocean waves with brushstrokes using different brushes. More techniques such as dry brush and other ways to create texture will be demonstrated in this class. The last task will be creating a mini ocean waves scene.
Week III: Paint – This class will be all about paint and color. In this part, watercolor paints will be discussed and some of the common mistakes beginners make when painting. There will be a little bit of color theory, color mixing discussed. Shading and glazing will also be demonstrated. We’ll talk about using black and white (or not) in watercolor and how to use the ‘white’ of the paper. The last mini painting will be a mini tree landscape using the color mixing techniques learned.
Week IV: Tips and Tricks – This final class will be comprised of teaching a lot of tips and tricks that I have learned over the years. I will also talk about additional supplies that I love to have in my arsenal and how to use them. We will also play with masking fluid in this class. More techniques such as texture with a card.
For the last quickie mini painting we’ll do some little aspen trees or pine trees.
