Where will this be held?

We have two possible locations for this event depending on the weather. Both sites are near OSU campus. In either scenario, both options are backyard/garage locations at the private residences, hence we will not publicly post addresses. We will email ticketholders the week of the event with info.

What if I've never styled a bonsai or cared for one of this species before?

Accepted Answer

All levels of participation include hands-on instruction from Kevin Faris and Ryan Huston who combined have nearly 30 years of bonsai experience to share. We are here to offer advice and demonstrate how to care for and style these from semi-raw material into refined bonsai.

Question 3

What tools and supplies are included? (all tiers)

Accepted Answer

Recycled aluminum bonsai wire is available as well as loaner pruner shears and limited quantities of more advanced bonsai tools. Participants should bring their own tools and wire if they have them.

What is included in the ticket price? (beginner tier)

Accepted Answer

For the beginner tier, the workshop includes 1x 5-year-old hardy yew prebonsai.

What is included in the ticket price (intermediate tier)

Accepted Answer

For the intermediate tier, the workshop price includes 1x 20-year-old Juniper procumbens.

What's the plan for lunch?

Accepted Answer

Lunch is not included in the workshop fee but there are nearby local restaurants/grocery stores you are free to patronize in the Old North neighborhood or you may bring your own lunch! Refrigeration and a microwave are available on site if needed.

Who is Kevin Faris? (instructor 1)

Accepted Answer

Kevin Faris hails from the bonsai mecca of Portland, Oregon. He has since studied with Chase Rosade and other bonsai greats! Kevin also won the Ben Oki Bonsai Scholarship for his efforts with the Columbus Bonsai Society, OSU Bonsai Club, American Bonsai Society, & Bonsai Time Podcast.

Who is Ryan Huston? (instructor 2)

Accepted Answer

Ryan Huston is born and raised in Columbus but dove deep into bonsai as a apprentice for 4-years under Dan Robinson of Elandan Gardens. For the past 4 years, Ryan has focused on starting his own nursery, In Vivo Bonsai and the Columbus Bonsai Society, OSU Bonsai Club, and Bonsai Time Podcast.

What will we learn by participating?

Accepted Answer

Participants will learn or be reminded of the basics of keeping an outdoor bonsai alive, species-specific nuances for juniper and yew, stylistic advice, practical technique advice on pruning and wiring, as well as get to know other local bonsai artists here in Columbus!

Question 10

What will we bring home from this workshop? Will we have a finished bonsai?

Accepted Answer

The nature of bonsai is a gradual process. Depending on how much you decide to prune off of your plant your tree may look somewhat "finished" by the end. But any drastic change will need to be done in stages so the tree's health is preserved. We will at least assist in developing a long-term plan.
