Before I Was CEO: A Discussion with Two Fulbright Alumni

The Greater NY Fulbright Chapter is thrilled to bring you this special event in partnership with One To World and the KU Leuven Alumni US Chapter!

You are invited to join us for an exclusive conversation with two Fulbright alumni: Alberto Vitale, former CEO of Random House, and Peter Vanham, author of the newly published book, Before I Was CEO, which profiles the lives of 20 CEOs, including Mr. Vitale. The inspiration for this book came to Peter when he met Alberto Vitale through a One To World program during his Fulbright fellowship at Columbia University. The two will discuss their first meeting and personal backgrounds, lessons learned from CEOs profiled in the book, and answer audience questions. All participants will receive a copy of Before I was CEO.

After the talk, you will have opportunity to mingle with current Fulbright grantees, Fulbright alumni, KU Leuven alumni, and other friends of Flanders House New York, over wine and light refreshments. We are grateful to Flanders House New York for generously sponsoring this program at their beautiful space in The New York Times building. Space is limited and will be first-come-first-served.

SPEAKER BIOS

Alberto Vitale is the former Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Random House, Inc.: Mr. Vitale served as Chairman and CEO of Random House from 1989 to 1998. Random House, a division of Bertelsmann AG, is the world's largest English-language general trade book publisher. Through its many prestigious imprints, it publishes some of the foremost writers of our time in hardcover, trade paperback, mass market paperback, electronic, multimedia, and other formats. Mr. Vitale was born in Italy in 1933 and educated in both French and Italian schools; he went on to receive his doctorate in economics from the University of Turin. In 1957, he attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania as a Fulbright Scholar. After completing his education, Mr. Vitale went on to an accomplished career in the publishing industry, with positions at Olivettie, Bertelsmann Publishing Group, Inc., Bantam Doubleday Dell Publishing Group, Inc., and Random House, among others. He has received many accolades and was honored at the inaugural One To World Fulbright Awards Dinner in 1991.

Peter Vanham, the author of Before I Was CEO, is a business journalist, entrepreneur, & media professional: Currently living and working in NY, Peter Vanham is a Global Leadership Fellow at the World Economic Forum and a contributor to Financial Times, Business Insider, and Forbes. He has written for newspapers and magazines all over Europe and the U.S. For his work, he received honorary grants and scholarships from the Fulbright Foundation, the King Baudouin Foundation, and The Pascal Decroos fund for Investigative Journalism. Before becoming a journalist, Mr. Vanham worked as a management consultant at Bain & Company. He holds an MA in Business and Economics from Columbia Journalism School and an MSc in Commercial Engineering from the University of Leuven in Belgium. He previously worked as a Management Consultant at Bain & Company. In his spare time, Mr. Vanham likes to ride his race bicycle, a passion he’s had since he was 12.
