Moody atmosphere and raw storytelling from the dark corners of the heart--the sound of ghosts, memory and light.
Bees in a Bottle is the Portland indie-rock duo of Christine and Chad McAllister, crafting intimate, emotionally rich songs that blur the lines between indie rock, folk noir, and slow-burning cinematic pop. Known for their moody guitar textures, haunting melodies, and Christine’s evocative vocals, the band has carved out a distinct niche blending cinematic storytelling with ethereal sonic atmosphere to explore loss, memory and the fragile beauty of human connection.
The duo’s first album, Quiet Room, debuted in 2013, followed by the Heartsleeve EP and their 2020 full-length Treasures Ugly and Few. Each release reflects a progression toward deeper, more complex emotional terrain.
Their most recent album, The Sun Left and Took the Moon With It (2023), is a concept record inspired by the inner lives of women left behind by rock icons lost to suicide and addiction. It’s a haunting, imaginative exploration of grief, memory, and resilience—stories told not from the stage, but from the shadows. The album has been praised for its emotional honesty, lyrical depth, and layered production. It was featured on NPR's All Songs Considered, NPR's Music playlist, Premiered in Under The Radar Magazine and Indie Pulse called it "One of the best releases of 2023." NPR’s Bob Boilen listed their song 'Wet Widow' in his Top 25 Songs of 2023.
Christine’s voice—equal parts fragile and fierce—anchors the band’s sound, while Chad’s multi-instrumental work builds immersive, ever-evolving sonic landscapes. Together, they create music that is deeply human: sometimes sorrowful, sometimes beautiful, always honest.
For fans of intimate storytelling, atmospheric textures, and emotionally resonant songwriting, Bees in a Bottle offers an evocative and cathartic listening experience.
