Take a retreat from the pixels, ROIs, and mass production. Join this 6 week retreat into nature—where science and beauty mingle to inspire and constrain the design and the production process. Nature leaves mental space for free drawing. Then the physical materials of the print process (paints, screens, surface) reintroduce nature’s limits.

Exploring compositions in 4 colors, participants will practice the translation of images of the mind (beauty/gift) into a replicable application (science/product). Class participants will produce an image to be silkscreened in 4 colors by teaching artist and local printmaker Jon Flannery of Cryptogram. We will reflect on the historical relationship between the artist and the master printer throughout the duration of the course, providing examples and making connections. This advanced Hive course integrates Art and Contemplation.

There will be a final exhibition of each artist’s print at The Hive on November 3rd. Students will walk away with a focused understanding of applying image making to the silkscreen process; an edition of 20 prints of their own; a folio of 1 of each artist’s print; and a poster promoting the show.

Jon Flannery has a BFA in Printmaking from the Art Academy of Cincinnati, and has designed and printed art for clients ranging from the bands The Harlequins and A Delicate Motor, to Artworks, People’s Liberty and Kunsthous.

Classes will be held at Cryptogram’s Northside studio, a few blocks from the Hive, at 390 Spring Grove Ave.

This six week course meets from September 13th through October 18th.
