This Baybayin Script Workshop is a community gathering to reconnect with ourselves, our communities, and our ancestral power.

What is Baybayin?

Baybayin is the ancient script used by Filipinos for centuries before Spanish colonization. Learning this beautiful and expressive script is more than just memorizing characters - it's a journey of cultural rediscovery.

What is Undas?

Undas or all souls day (Nov 1) is a time of remembrance. a Filipino tradition of honouring our ancestors, visiting their resting places, and tending to their memory with candles, flowers, food, and prayer.

This gathering is an invitation to remember and honour who we come from. to slow down, to listen for our ancestors, and to give thanks for the ways they still move through us.

The Workshop:

The workshop includes guided facilitation on our ancient script, community reflection around undas, and a take home baybayin piece for your altar or ongoing practice of remembrance. Expect cozy, reflective, and joyful loving vibes with a likeminded community of Filipinos.

In this workshop (90 mins), you will:

  • Gain an understanding of the history and significance of Baybayin.
  • Learn the fundamentals of writing baybayin characters, including consonants, vowels, and markings (modern baybayin 17+)
  • Practice writing syllables and words.
  • Take home a reusable dry erase practice mat and make a baybayin piece for your altar

This undas, we invite you to participate in building our community altar. we encourage you to bring an item or photo from your altar to use in this workshop to help guide your baybayin practice. You’ll take your offering back with you after the workshop but is intended to bring us together for a moment of community remembrance.

This workshop is for you if:

  • You want a soft and cozy space to ground, reflect, and surround yourself with a loving community
  • You're interested in learning about pre-colonial Philippine history and culture.
  • You want to connect with your Filipino roots in a meaningful way.
