Event description

Join the Newtown Creek Alliance, NYC Audubon and the North Brooklyn Boat Club for a very unique canoe trip to find and observe everyone's favorite flying mammal, bats! Utilizing two 25' canoes, trained canoe trip leaders will lead the group onto Newtown Creek and into two very unique tributaries: Whale Creek in Brooklyn and Dutch Kills in Queens. For the past two years, ecologists from NYC Audubon have monitored bat activity atop the Kingsland Wildflowers green roof in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Data has shown this time of year to be the most active for local bat populations and ecologists will join the canoe expedition to help identify ideal areas for feeding and nesting. After on-land safety instruction and an intro lecture about Newtown Creek and local ecology, particpants will head out onto the Creek and be on the water during sunset, returning back to the dock in the dark.

All participants are required to sign a waiver of liability. No canoe experience is required; all boating and safety equipment is provided by the North Brooklyn Boat Club.

This event is made possible with generous support from the Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund and the Office of the New York State Attorney General and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
