Overview

Learn the basic safety and operation for the plunge router and the router table at the Lacey MakerSpace with instructor Luca

BASICS: Routers with Luca Scardapane

This class runs about 1 hr to 1.5 hrs and covers how to safely operate the routers, change the bits and clean up for the next person.

A plunge router is used formaking precise, controlled cuts within a workpiece. its ideal for tasks like cutting mortises, stopped dados (grooves), inlays, and decorative flutes by lowering the spinning bit vertically into the material. Its spring-loaded base allows the bit to be plunged to a specific depth and then lifted straight up, making it perfect for creating recesses, keyholes, or circular cuts in the middle of a board.

Table routers are stationary woodworking setups that mount a handheld router upside down, turning it into a precise station forguiding wood pieces over the spinning bit for tasks like decorative edge profiling, cutting joinery (dados, rabbets, dovetails), creating grooves, and making repeatable cuts, offering more control, safety (especially with large bits), and consistency than freehand routing.

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to use the hand held plunge routers and table router independently at LMS. As part of the class, you'll have a chance to demonstrate what you've learned on the routers to gain proficiency.

Individuals are welcome to sign up for multiple basics classes until they feel confident on the equipment.
