Join us in Ann Arbor this September for an immersive, three-day Basic Training Program specifically designed for new public defenders and assigned counsel across Michigan. This intensive, in-person training will equip participants with essential skills and practical knowledge critical to effective advocacy. Participants will gain hands-on experience in key areas, including:
- Arraignment Advocacy: Master strategies for impactful initial appearances.
- Discovery and Investigation: Learn techniques for thorough case preparation.
- Cross-Examination: Develop compelling questioning skills to effectively challenge witnesses.
- Motion Practice: Build proficiency in drafting, arguing, and winning motions.
- Plea Negotiations: Acquire negotiation strategies to achieve favorable client outcomes.
- Client-Centered Representation: Emphasize empathy, communication, and advocacy tailored to your client’s individual needs.
- Sentencing Advocacy: Understand how to persuasively present mitigating factors for just outcomes.
This foundational program is perfect for attorneys new to indigent defense practice, offering both foundational knowledge and practical skills through expert-led sessions and dynamic simulation exercises. Strengthen your advocacy, enhance your practice, and build a robust foundation for your career defending indigent clients.
This program is being offered at the EVEN Hotel Ann Arbor S - University Area (600 Briarwood Circle, Ann Arbor, MI 48108) from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm each day.
Participants will earn 21 hours of CLE credit for participation in the full program, and the program will satisfy the skills training requirements of Standard 1. You must attend the entire program in order to receive CLE credits.
To be eligible for participation in the program, you must be a licensed attorney representing indigent defendants within the State of Michigan. You must plan to participate in the entire three-day program.
