This Basic Principles of Somatic Experiencing is a live workshop for professionals interested in learning the basic principles and theory of the SE model and how it can be implemented to support various trauma-related diagnoses.
During this event, you will gain insight into the core concepts of Somatic Experiencing. Upon completion of this training, the following objectives will be met:
- Participants will be able to distinguish the difference between exteroception and enteroception.
- Participants will be able to explain three effects of untreated/unresolved trauma
- Participants will be able to explain the difference between a somatic approach and a traditional cognitive approach to healing.
- Participants will be able to identify three steps in assisting clients in grounding exercises
- Participants will be able to identify and explain the two branches of the autonomic nervous system
- Participants will be able to explain the differences between the activation and deactivation cycles
- Participants will be able to identify two indicators of each of the common trauma responses, fight, flight, and freeze
- Participants will be able to provide three examples of basic somatic experiencing interventions.

Ilsa Araki is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Board-Approved Supervisor and a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner with advanced certifications including BASE™ (Bodywork and Somatic Education) and Certified First Responder Counselor (CFRC). She is the founder and clinical director of a group private practice based in Slidell, Louisiana.
Ilsa specializes in developmental and attachment trauma, integrating Somatic Experiencing with Internal Family Systems (IFS), attachment repatterning modalities, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to support clients in their healing journeys. In addition to her clinical work, she offers consultation to fellow therapists seeking to deepen their understanding of trauma through an experiential and somatic lens.
Ilsa is also a member of Somatic Experiencing® International (SEI), contributing to the training and development of practitioners in the SE community.

Pamela Quekemeyer is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Board Approved Supervisor, and Alcohol Drug Certified Counselor in the state of Alabama. Pamela is the owner and founder of Birmingham Therapy Services. As a Certified EMDR Therapist and Brainspotting Pamela's clinical background includes work in community agencies and hospital settings at both clinical and administrative levels.
Pamela's practice is rooted in trauma-informed care and focuses on helping clients understand how past and present experiences shape current symptoms by offering a safe, supportive environment where clients can build resources, develop coping skills, and strengthen their nervous system for deeper healing work.
Pamela integrates modalities such as EMDR, Brainspotting, Somatic Experiencing, Parts Work, and experiential therapies to support clients in processing painful experiences and developing a sense of agency, empowerment, and healing.
