What’s on the Menu:

  • Soy Sauce Jalapeño Pickles
  • Seafood Pancakes (Haemul Pajeon)
  • Banana Milk Cocktail
  • Plus, everything you want to know about soju, makgeolli and Korean drinking culture

Description:

The author of the new book “Soju Party” and chef-owner of the Orion Bar—a blend of a Korea-town street stall and an American dive bar—guest teacher Irene Yoo grew up going back and forth between Los Angeles and Seoul, South Korea. There, she learned the intricacies of Korean drinking culture, including, of course, how to pair food and drinks like a pro. In this livestream class, you’ll make a batch of jalapeño-spiked cucumbers pickled in soy sauce as you learn about Korea’s most famous spirit, soju: how it’s distilled, what to look for in a good bottle and which foods go with it the best, plus how to open, share and enjoy a bottle of soju without embarrassing yourself. As we make a batch of savory seafood pancakes with a dipping sauce that calls on four of the most essential ingredients of the Korean pantry, you’ll learn about makgeolli, an old alcohol—even older and more quintessential than soju—that’s now becoming cool again. Finally, you’ll enjoy a custom cocktail of Irene’s own design that is a nod to one of Korea’s most nostalgic beverages. And if you’re really lucky, Irene will show you how to execute a perfect “soju tornado,” the sign of a truly expert soju aficionado. Whether you’re eager to learn more about Korean spirits or are more into the food found at the country’s best bars, there’s something for everyone at this class.
