Join us for our Cookbook Club to read, cook, and eat from BAHARI by Dina Macki.

Bahari, meaning “ocean” in Swahili, is a culinary exploration of the rich flavors and history of Omani cuisine, a food culture shaped by boundless coastlines and complex maritime history, with origins and influences spanning Pakistan, Iran, India, the Swahili coast, and Portugal.

In this distinctive cookbook, Dina Macki travels across Oman and Zanzibar, unearthing regional delicacies and recreating the food of her heritage. By combining personal essays and contemporary twists on traditional recipes, she taps into the stories behind the recipes and ingredients, bringing a fresh perspective on migration and identity and exploring how food connects us to our past and our communities.

To participate, reserve your spot via this Eventbrite. Then, select a recipe from BAHARI and sign up to bring it via THIS SPREADSHEET. Copies of Bahari are available for sale at Bol's pop-up at Creative Grounds in DC (1822 North Capitol St. NW). If you can't access a copy of the book, you can also reach out to us at info@bol.coop and we can share a photograph of any recipe you like with you.

Some notes: We will not have an oven or microwave on hand to heat up the food. We are also striving to make this event zero-waste, so please bring your own servingware, plate, cutlery, napkins, and water!
