We will be hosting a maple tapping class at the Bullitt County Cooperative Extension Office on October 2, at 5:30 PM. Nathan Rider, Bullitt County Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent, will teach the basics of tapping maple trees and boiling maple syrup ahead of the 2025-26 syruping season this winter. We will walk out into the Extension "Sugar Bush" (grove of Sugar Maples) to try tapping first hand before taking a bucket, tube, and tap home to try on your own.
Take note of the timing though. If you hope to tap maple trees this winter, start identifying a few potential trees (10" in diameter or larger) and marking them with surveyors tape or a mark of spray paint before the leaves fall this autumn. We will discuss tapping sugar maples, red maples, box elders, and black walnuts.
The class is free and each registrant will take home one tap, tube, and bucket to use at home this winter.
