A Candlelit Meditation on the Sacred Mother

A Candlelit Meditation on the Sacred Mother

Overview

Four voices, one luminous space — ancient and modern Marian works in a breathtaking meditation on sacred love.

Join Seraphour—an award-winning chamber vocal ensemble —for a Candlelit Meditation on the Sacred Mother in the stunning setting of St. Basil’s on Wilshire Boulevard.

Known for its bold, modernist architecture and striking vertical design, St. Basil’s provides a dramatic yet contemplative backdrop for an evening of sacred music by candlelight. As dusk falls, the play of shadow, light, and flame transforms the concrete and stained glass into a space of profound stillness.

With just four voices in close harmony, Seraphour interlaces timeless chant, Renaissance polyphony, and contemporary works written for the ensemble. The program features multiple settings of Ave Maria, alongside Salve Regina, Ave verum corpus, and other treasures of the Marian tradition. Music by Palestrina, Monteverdi, Arcadelt, Poulenc, and Busto is paired with new works composed especially for Seraphour by Nick Strimple and Sam Scheibe.

Though rooted in the Catholic tradition, this candlelit meditation is open to all who long for beauty, peace, and reflection. Whether you come drawn by the music, the architecture, or the quiet power of candlelight, this evening at St. Basil’s promises a transcendent experience.
