By Clark County Historical Museum

Overview

Author Tyler Bieber shares the untold story of Father Tom Oddo, a Catholic trailblazer for LGBTQ+ inclusion.

Join the Clark County Historical Museum for a special evening with author Tyler Bieber as he presents his new book Against the Current: Father Tom Oddo and the New American Catholic.

Father Thomas Oddo (1944–1989), known simply as “Father Tom,” was one of the most influential activists for LGBTQ+ inclusion in the Catholic Church. At just 29, he co-founded DignityUSA, a groundbreaking organization that carved out space for Catholics seeking to reconcile faith and identity. By 38, he became President of the University of Portland, a rising star in higher education.

Though his life was tragically cut short in a car accident at age 45, Father Tom’s story remains a vital and overlooked chapter of American history. Through interviews, personal archives, and never-before-seen documents, Bieber sheds light on a man who shaped modern Catholicism and civil rights.

This event will offer attendees an engaging conversation about faith, resilience, and the legacy of a leader whose courage continues to inspire.
