Audio Mastering is the very elusive art of preparing audio for broadcast-quality playback. It's difficult to learn how to master by looking it up on the internet, because the best mastering engineers tend to be protective of their craft.

In this workshop, we'll go over the basics of how to master of audio "in the box" (using only digital software on a computer).

If there's an interest, we'll also go over the basics of mixing, specifically as it relates to what makes a good and bad mix for the mastering process

Come to the session with a prepared mix of a song or a few stems (four or fewer). Don't increase the volume of the mix when bringing it to class (we'll start with mixes that have loudness of -17 Db RMS and -5 Db peak)

We'll go over the basic tools of mastering, including Equalization (static and dynamic), Compression and Multipression (static and dynamic), Exciters, Stereo Imaging, Limiters, and Maximizers.

We'll go over all tracks using the Izotope Ozone mastering software, either on your own computer, or if you're up for it, together as a group.

Download and install the free trial for the standalone version of Izotope Ozone 7. We'll be using the version of Ozone 7 that operates as its own program (not in the DAW).
