Question 1

How long is the workshop, and what is the schedule?

Accepted Answer

We expect the workshop to run no longer than three hours. We will meet at Maloit Park behind the Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy. After introductions we will walk into the park to learn the astrophotography techniques and take photos.

Question 2

Do I need prior photography experience to participate?

Accepted Answer

You do not need prior photography experience to participate. The workshop is beginner friendly as we will teach the basic camera settings of shutter-speed, aperture and ISO as they relate to astrophotography.

Question 3

What if I don't have a camera, or tripod?

Accepted Answer

We have cameras, lenses and tripods we are able to rent. Contact us at gnarlos.project@gmail.com

Question 4

What should I wear?

Accepted Answer

We recommend dressing very warmly with winter boots, insulated pants, layers of jackets, winter hats, gloves and hand warmers. We will be outside at night. Feel free to bring warm drinks and snacks.

Question 5

What if it is cloudy, or unfavorable for taking night photos?

Accepted Answer

If it is cloudy and we can't see the stars, we will sill teach the techniques of astrophotography and will practice these techniques with long exposure photos applied to light painting. If the conditions are mutually agreed to be unsafe for taking photos we will reschedule or refund the workshop.

Can I use my phone?

Accepted Answer

While the workshop is geared for DSLR/Mirrorless cameras, if you would like to use your phone we can accommodate it. We have two mini tripods and phone cages available for rental.

Question 7

Should I bring extra batteries or memory cards?

Accepted Answer

If you have extra batteries we recommend bringing them, as the cold can shorten battery life. If your memory card is nearly full, we recommend having a backup.

Question 8

Will transportation to the site be provided?

Accepted Answer

We have capacity for three participants in our vehicle to provide transportation to the site from the USFS bus stop in Minturn if needed.

Question 9

Can I expect to leave with completed photos or just the knowledge to continue practicing?

Accepted Answer

You can expect to leave with completed photos on your memory card, and the knowledge to continue practicing.  If you rent equipment we will be able to file-share your captured images after the event.

Question 10

Will you provide post-workshop resources or guides?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we can provide resources following the workshop to aid with editing your photos. We can also offer additional services for editing and providing you with high resolution photos.
