Workshop: Spatial Linear Models for Environmental Data
Instructors:
- Jay Ver Hoef (NOAA, retired)
- Dale Zimmerman (University of Iowa)
- Michael Dumelle (EPA)
This two-day workshop will expose participants to spatial linear modeling concepts and tools for environmental data analysis, based on the book Spatial Linear Models for Environmental Data by Zimmerman and Ver Hoef (available here).
The course will focus on understanding and applying spatial extensions of linear models—including regression and ANOVA—for geostatistical and areal (lattice) data. The instructors will highlight real-world applications, reproducible workflows in R using the spmodel package, and practical techniques for exploring, fitting, and interpreting spatial models.
Participants will gain hands-on experience through examples and shared datasets and will leave with the tools to implement spatial linear models in their own work.
Topics may include:
- Exploratory methods for spatial data
- Covariance modeling for geostatistical and areal data
- Spatial regression and design
- Prediction and spatial sampling
- Model fitting, diagnostics, and inference using R
No prior experience with spatial models is required, but attendees should have a background in statistics and basic familiarity with R.
About the Instructors
- Jay Ver Hoef is a retired NOAA statistician with extensive experience in spatial statistics and environmental applications.
- Dale Zimmerman is a professor of statistics at the University of Iowa and co-author of the course textbook.
