Artists and Architects at Work: A Speculative Dialogue
Overview
On December 2nd, SCI-Arc CEO and Director Winka Dubbeldam and MOCA Chief Curator Clara Kim will engage in a public dialogue exploring the various practices and modes of thinking that artists and architects bring to their creative work. The program, titled “Artists and Architects at Work: A Speculative Dialogue,” is part of the ongoing exhibition “Speculative Artifacts” at Art/Space 114 in Downtown Los Angeles, co-hosted by 2413 Hyperion, which features thesis projects by sixteen selected SCI-Arc students. The conversation will be moderated by Art/Space 114 Director Tom Gilmore and 2413 Hyperion Director Tim Disney.
The program begins at 7:00 PM. Free and open to the public. Drinks will be served.
A bit about our panelists:
Winka Dubbeldam is the founding partner of the WBE firm Archi-Tectonics NYC, LLC (1994), and is widely known for her award-winning work. She was the Chair and Miller Professor of Architecture at UPenn for 20 years, and has taught at Columbia, Cornell and Harvard University. She has been the external examiner for the AA (6 years), and at the Bartlett UCL, both in London. She has chaired many design juries, such as the AIANY, Prix de Rome, Plan Magazine, and Boffo, and was named one of Design Intelligence's 30 Most Admired Educators in 2015. Winka was the creative director for the Visual Italian Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale (2021–2023) and has lectured worldwide at many symposia and universities. Winka assumed the role of SCI-Arc Director / CEO on September 1, 2025.
Clara Kim is chief curator and director of curatorial affairs at the Museum of Contemporary Art, LA, a position she has held since September 2022. Prior to MOCA, Kim was Daskalopoulos senior curator of international art at Tate Modern in London. Recent curatorial projects include Paul Pfeiffer: Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom (MOCA 2024; Guggenheim Bilbao 2024–25; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago 2025), Steve McQueen (Tate Modern 2020; Hangar Bicocca, Milan 2022); 2019 Hyundai Commission Kara Walker: Fons Americanus (Tate Modern 2019–21). She sits on the Board of CIMAM and served as the chair of the 2024 Annual CIMAM Conference in Los Angeles titled Sustainable Futures: How? When? For Whom?
Tim Disney is an artist and entrepreneur from Los Angeles and Director of the community art space 2413 Hyperion. Tim has produced, written, or directed multiple award-winning feature films and documentaries that have appeared at Sundance, Telluride, and SXSW. He was CEO of Virtual World Entertainment, a pioneer of virtual reality and networked simulation systems. He currently serves as a corporate director of Marginal Media Works and Dragonfly Therapeutics. In the not-for-profit sector, he served as a Trustee of SciArc for 12 years, of CalArts for 29 years, the last 8 as Chairman, and of MOCA from 2022 to 2025.
Tom Gilmore is a real estate developer and cultural advocate whose work has significantly shaped the contemporary landscape of Downtown Los Angeles. A pioneer of adaptive reuse, Tom led transformative development projects that helped catalyze the revitalization of the Historic Core, setting a precedent for urban reinvention in Los Angeles and beyond. He has held board roles with key creative and educational institutions, including SCI-Arc and ArtCenter, the former of which he served as Chairman of the Board from 2015 to 2019. His work continues to champion public art, arts education, and nonprofit cultural initiatives across the region. He is also the Director of Art/Space 114, a nonprofit Downtown Los Angeles gallery dedicated to curating thoughtful exhibitions and fostering an inclusive, engaged artistic community.
