Art und Weise: Free Improvisation
Overview
Free improvisation is a form of music that rejects traditional musical structure and privlidges spontaneity with a focus on the performer's intuition.
Art und Weise: Free Improvisation will engage with non-conventional structure and explore artistic material as something abstract. Utilizing fragments and discarded elements from his back-archive compiled in the course of his artistic practice and informed by the musical ethos of free improvisation, Richard Sides will create a live show his work and draw from his own archives without style. Taking the premise of a lecture, Sides will create, in real-time, an audio track with accompanying visuals that invites the audience into his creative process.
This Art und Weise event is a companion to Side's current work on view in the exhibition, Four Dilations, currently on view at MoMA PS1.
An audience Q&A will follow Side's performance.
Richard Sides (b. 1985, Rotherham, UK) is an artist and curator based in Berlin. His works explore contemporary ideas of meaning as an existential problem. These often manifest as environments that treat the exhibition as sites with their own obstructions and particularities to respond to. Recent solo and duo exhibitions include Four Dilations, MoMA PS1 (2025), New York; Elections, Shore Gallery, Vienna (2024); Slow Dance (4) with Nicole-Antonia Spagnola, Stadtgalerie Bern (2023); Basic Vision, KOW, Berlin (2022); The Matrix, Schiefe Zähne, Berlin (2021); Dwelling, Kunstverein Braunschweig (2019), and PURE HATE, Liszt (2017). Richard has participated in numerous group exhibitions including Kunsthalle Zurich, Bonner Kunstverein, Kunsthaus Glarus, Kunstverein Hannover, Atonal Berlin, Fluentum Berlin and Swiss Institute, New York. He is co-director of The Wig in Berlin and runs Bus Editions since 2010.
