Join The Art League for an inspiring week of art-making nestled in the Allegheny Mountains. In the scenic town of Thomas, West Virginia, you'll spend your days drawing or painting in the medium and subject of your choice—still life or landscape—under the expert and entertaining guidance of accomplished artists and friends, Danni Dawson and Kurt Schwartz.

Participants can choose to work with one instructor for the duration of the week or rotate between to gain diverse perspectives and techniques.

This retreat-style workshop offers the perfect balance of focused studio time, plein air sessions, and relaxed, artistic fellowship in a town known for its vibrant arts community.

Meet the Artist Instructors

Danni Dawson
Danni Dawson received her MFA from George Washington University and apprenticed with the legendary Nelson Shanks. A professional artist and beloved Art League instructor for over 25 years, Danni has exhibited her award-winning paintings nationally and internationally. Honors include the Allied Artist Award, Salmagundi Painting Prize, Audubon Award, and recognition from the National Academy of Art and Design. Her work has appeared in American Artist and is held in major collections worldwide. She has completed over 300 commissioned portraits—including the official portrait of Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor—and is equally celebrated for her striking still lifes.

Kurt Schwartz
Born in Washington, DC, Kurt Schwartz is known for his vibrant oil paintings, especially his still lifes that radiate with color. He earned his BA from George Washington University, where he studied drawing with Frank Wright and painting with Bill Woodward. Kurt's bold sense of color and refined technique have made his work a frequent favorite at National Horticultural Society exhibitions and beyond.

Is there an age requirement for this workshop?

Yes. Due to the nature of the workshop, advanced instruction, and travel requirements, this workshop is intended for adults aged 21 and up.

What should I bring?

After registration, a suggested packing and supply list will be provided. You'll need your preferred painting/drawing materials, appropriate outdoor/studio attire, and personal items for travel.

Is lodging included?

No. Lodging is not included. Participants are responsible for securing their accommodations in or near Thomas, WV. A list of local lodging recommendations and helpful tips will be provided.

Is transportation provided?

No. Participants are responsible for their own travel to and from Thomas, WV, and local transportation during the workshop.

Are meals included?

Meals are not included, but Thomas offers several restaurants, cafes, and local markets. The group are welcome to independently coordinate shared meals during the week.

Can I work with more than one instructor?

Yes! You are welcome to work with one instructor throughout the week or rotate between Danni and Kurt to gain a variety of perspectives.

Will there be a model?

No model is planned for this workshop. Figure work may be included depending on group interest and mutual agreement. If a model is engaged, please note that model fees are not included and will need to be split among participants if applicable.
