About this event

Arts • Fine Art

How can a single painting capture an entire sequence of events, or hint at moments yet to come? For centuries, artists have defied the limitations of the canvas to manipulate time—stretching it, compressing it, and even freezing it mid-motion. From Renaissance masterpieces to modern-day works, get ready to explore a visual tradition where every brushstroke is a decision about what to reveal, what to withhold, and how long a moment can truly last.

Join New York Adventure Club as we journey through Western European art history to uncover how artists portrayed the passage of time, revealing a legacy of storytelling techniques that turn static images into dynamic narratives.

Led by art historian, museum guide, and New York Adventure Club lecturer Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff, our unique experience will include:

  • An overview of narrative styles in art, including Monoscenic, Continuous, and Synoptic Narratives
  • A look at solar time, calendars, and seasonal cycles as depicted in historical artworks
  • An exploration of symbolic timepieces, from sundials and hourglasses to the enigmatic Ouroboros
  • Depictions of 'Father Time' and the role of allegory in visualizing time
  • A discussion around movement and stillness, and how artists created the illusion of time unfolding
  • Insights into artistic legacy, and how painters reckoned with mortality through their work

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Mariska — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!

About Mariska

Mariska is a Social Psychologist by trade but took up her love for the arts again after the birth of her children.

Heavily pregnant with number 3, Mariska finished her MA at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, in Dutch Baroque Art. Soon after this she was lucky enough to lecture for the most wonderful group of students. She decided this was what she wanted to do and set up Art Historical London offering art historical lectures, courses, tours, travel and events from London and Amsterdam, and since 2020 online.

Fully accredited in the UK to teach the over 16, Mariska also lectures for NAFDAS, an arts education society with members in the UK and Mainland Europe, New Zealand and Australia. She is a lecturer with the public program of the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, and can provide live, online and recorded lectures for groups or individuals.
