The nation is pursuing a bold agenda to address the climate crisis and build a clean and equitable energy economy that achieves carbon pollution-free electricity by 2035 and puts the U.S. on a path to achieve net-zero emissions, economy-wide, by 2050. Batteries for transportation and stationary storage are central to this transition.

Techno-economic analysis will be key to the deployment of energy storage projects funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which invests more than $7 billion in the supply chain for batteries and aims to advance environmental justice. Analysis tools developed by Argonne help U.S. battery companies identify major cost drivers and define possible pathways to attain cost thresholds at which a new technology can become competitive. Argonne also performs analyses that support the environmental and energy justice priorities of federal agencies.

Argonne’s modeling tools provide an engineering-level view of process design options, sizing (or scale), and cost of myriad components, as well as material and energy inputs at the process level. The tools can connect upstream and downstream processes to evaluate various supply chain scenarios and options.
