On a walk/talk from the Visitor’s Center out into the refuge, Bill "The Fox Guy" Leikam will show you how to identify indications of the presence of foxes, and tell stories about gray foxes that he’s studied and learned from. Bill will answer questions along the way and at the end reveal something about the foxes right here at the Visitor Center that not many people know is even there!

This program meets outside the Visitor Center. Portable toilets are available onsite. Wear comfortable walking shoes and sun protection/layers!

About Bill Leikam: Since October 2009, Bill Leikam has conducted unprecedented, groundbreaking field research on the behavior of the gray fox. He is an associate director of the North Santa Clara Resource Conservation District. Bill has many accomplishments to his name, including: being a published live jazz reviewer for All About Jazz; contributed to the field guide, Canids of the World by Dr. Jose Castello, published by the Princeton University Press; has been praised in Beth Pratt’s book, When Mountain Lions are Neighbors as “the Jane Goodall of the gray fox”; and has been the subject of various magazines and news articles. On May 7, 2025, Bill Was interviewed by Alie Ward for her internationally acclaimed podcast Ologies. As of 6/09/2025, 189,354 people had listened to the interview.

Containing almost 30,000 acres of estuarine habitat, uplands, open water, mudflats, salt ponds, and salt marshes, including much of southern San Francisco Bay, Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge provides habitat for many wildlife.  Its purpose is to protect wildlife habitat for endangered species and migratory birds, and to offer opportunities for nature study. The Visitor Center and Nature Store in Fremont, is open on Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM.

Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge is part of the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Complex and is administered by the US Fish & Wildlife Service. The San Francisco Bay Wildlife Society is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) Friends group supporting the education, interpretation, and research activities of San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuges.
