The impact of natural disasters is not limited to property damage. Catastrophic events stress all systems, communities, and individuals, but certain groups—especially vulnerable populations such as the elderly, disabled, sick, and those in poverty—struggle harder to recover from a crisis. According to the Resilient Design Institute, “...social aspects of resilience can be as important as physical responses.” In addition to discussing design strategies that promote resiliency, this panel will explore the social dimension of resilient design. Through the lens of several recent projects, experts will reveal the influence of the built environment on brain health, emotional and physical well-being, empathy for others, and connection to one’s community.
