About this event

  • Event lasts 1 day 7 hours

"Archetypes of Virtue" is the 2025"Memory Parlor" sponsored by the Cora di Brazzà Foundation. It will be held in Philadelphia, PA, the city of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection, and at the breathtaking Philadelphia Masonic Temple. We will meet on July 23-24, 2025.

What is a "Memory Parlor"? Inspired by the Ancient Art of memory, at Memory Parlors, we connect fragmented narratives that pertain to peace, justice and human dignity, under the protection and shelter of beauty.

Our Memory Parlors acknowledge the need for spaces to cultivate our understanding of morally relevant history. This history includes the stories of value-centric ideas and of persons who bring those ideas to life. At their core, Memory Parlors rest on the principle that morally relevant history — multidisciplinary by nature, drawing from philosophy, psychology, law, literature and beyond — is a narrative of past ethics. As such, it is an essential guide as we navigate toward a more just and compassionate future.

DAY 1 (July 23, 2025): Conceptual Anchor: Memory, Virtue, and Archetypes

(10:30am-4:00pm)

2025 marks the 150th anniversary of Carl Jung’s birth (1875–1961), the pioneering psychologist who reimagined the human psyche as a storehouse of inherited "archetypes" or primordial images that permeate the subconscious. As foundational texts of Tibetan Buddhism—a philosophy grounded in peace and nonviolence—were first translated into English during the 20th century, Jung recognized striking parallels between Buddhist understandings of the mind and his own psychological theories which posited an inherited storehouse of motifs. On Day 1 of our Memory Parlor, we explore these themes, and will focus on stories that illuminate how memory, image, and archetype contribute to the cultivation of virtue.

Day 2 (July 24, 2025): Conceptual Anchor: Memory, Virtue, and the Korean War

(10:00am-4:00pm)

2025 marks the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War—an ideological conflict known as the "Forgotten War" in the United States—in which Koreans were armed with weapons from foreign powers. On Day 2 of our Memory Parlor, we explore connected themes of memory, moral injury and virtue connected to the Korean War. A focal point of this day is the "No Gun Ri Movement", a peace and human rights movement that arose from atrocities committed during the Korean War. The second half of this day will be held at the historic home of Dr. Philip Jaisohn in Media, Pennsylvania. A bus will be provided from the Masonic temple to Media.
