Applying AI - Designing for Ethical and Responsible Use
The future of work has changed and one of the driving forces is automation and AI. This panel will explore the applications of AI in various sectors from education to health to HR and other business needs. Whatever the application, how do we build in ethics and equity, and avoid unintended consequences? Join us on September 14 at the UC Berkeley Extension San Francisco Center, as we welcome fantastic thought leaders and seasoned innovation experts from University of California, The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), Riid Labs, Global IIT Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning Forum and CloudFabrix and Mindscale.ai, for a discussion about ethics and responsible AI, building the AI talent pipeline, and what we can all learn from this fast-changing landscape.
We will have the pleasure and honor to welcome Frederick Wehrle, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at UC Berkeley Extension as well as Camille Crittenden, Executive Director, Center for IT Research in the Interest of Society & the Banatao Inst. (CITRIS) at University of California for opening remarks on AI in the Interest of Society.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS:
Camille Crittenden, Executive Director, Center for IT Research in the Interest of Society & the Banatao Inst. (CITRIS) - University of California.

Camille Crittenden, Ph.D., is the executive director of CITRIS and the Banatao Institute and co-founder of the CITRIS Policy Lab and the EDGE (Expanding Diversity and Gender Equity) in Tech Initiative at UC. She also served as chair of the California Blockchain Working Group in 2019–20. Prior to coming to CITRIS in 2012, she was executive director of the Human Rights Center at Berkeley Law, where she helped to develop its program in human rights, technology and new media. She has written and spoken widely on these topics, as well as technology applications for civic engagement, government transparency and accountability, and the digital divide. She held positions as assistant dean for development with International and Area Studies at UC Berkeley and in development and public relations at University of California Press and San Francisco Opera. She earned an M.A. and Ph.D. from Duke University.

Seymour Duncker, CEO of Mindscale, is a tech entrepreneur who has successfully entered and experienced the creation and evolution of several large markets and technology paradigms (AI, BI - Business Intelligence, SaaS, CRM) launching products as well as creating and selling companies within those. Seymour has a deep and long standing background in big data and analytics, having built products and large scale data analytics systems for Fortune 500 companies. Mindscale is an advisory firm helping companies to translate Machine Learning into tangible value, and working with academia to bridge the last mile of AI. We collaborate with J-Clinic at MIT on deploying and validating clinical AI algorithms, and we collaborate with the MIT AI Policy Forum on understanding the challenges of deploying AI algorithms into practice.

John Robichaux is the inaugural Director of Education at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI). John is an award-winning executive and educator, with 25+ years expertise in advising, building, and growing high-impact organizations within the public, corporate, and philanthropic sectors. Prior to his current role, John served in senior leadership positions at Harvard, Stanford, and Columbia Universities, and as consultant, advisor, or board member for 200+ organizations worldwide. Jill Finlayson - Director, Expanding Diversity and Gender Equity in Tech (EDGE in Tech) Initiative, University of California

Jill Finlayson is Director of the EDGE in Tech Initiative at UC, co-sponsored by CITRIS and the Berkeley Engineering at UC Berkeley, which supports research and initiatives to promote the equitable participation of women in technology fields. Prior to Berkeley, she led mentorship and developed incubator and accelerator programs for Singularity University Ventures, whose mission is to increase the number of impact-focused tech startups. Finlayson ran the Toys category for five years at eBay and authored the book Fundraising on eBay. She managed a community of social entrepreneurs at the Skoll Foundation, led marketing at various startups, and consulted for the World Bank, Gates Foundation and Ford Foundation. Finlayson also judges and coaches founders of global startups for several startup competitions. She has mentored for TechWomen.org for the past nine years, also participating in delegation trips. Finlayson is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley.
