About this event

Duration: 4 days

Location: Denver, CO

Target Audience

Facility technicians, electricians, service engineers and anyone who may be responsible for the installation / setup / troubleshooting of VFDs.

Learning Objective

At the completion of this 4-day basic level course, students will be able to utilize all I/O functions to apply control schemes across several applications, understand the hardware components making up an AC Pulse Width Modulation(PWM) Variable Frequency Drive(VFD), how to utilize fault information for hardware troubleshooting, and know how to safely power a VFD during troubleshooting.

Abstract

PWM VFDs are unique electrical devices that utilize high speed switching technologies and power electronics that require a unique skill set in order to successfully apply control schemes and effective motor starting characteristics. Generally, there are two scenarios facing a VFD technician when installing or troubleshooting a VFD: Either you have specified drawings from an engineered solution, or you are applying a VFD into your application yourself. Both scenarios require the technician to fully understand the control capabilities of the drive and how the various internal systems function in order to troubleshoot them. Real world applications are used to implement basic open and closed loop control schemes. VFDs present electrical hazards and you will be shown safer methods of powering VFDs during troubleshooting as well as repair considerations and methods.

Class Topics include:

  • VFD safety considerations
  • Power terminal locations for Live-Dead-Live measurements
  • Fundamentals of open and closed loop control schemes
  • Entry level fieldbus communication for monitoring and control
  • Control schematics and physical wiring of VFD I/O points
  • Selecting VFD applications for testing / tuning of open and closed loop systems
  • Fundamentals of troubleshooting VFD software and hardware faults / test and measurement instruments
  • Safe methods of powering and testing VFDs and repair options.
