The Utah Geological Survey, with support from the Utah Professional Geologists Licensing Board, is holding the Applications of High Resolution Topographic (Lidar) Data to Geologic Hazards in Utah short course Monday and Tuesday, September 18 and 19, 2017, at the Robert B. Smith Computer Laboratory in the Federick Albert Sutton Building (FASB) Room 388 on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City.

Day 1 will introduce lidar and other high resolution topographic (HRT) data, along with discussions of data analysis. Day 2 will continue with HRT applications and an individual or small group project in the afternoon. The short course will be valuable for geologists, engineers, students, and others involved in analyzing geologic hazards, and will be taught by Dr. Ramon Arrowsmith of Arizona State University and Chris Crosby of UNAVCO/OpenTopography.

• 3:30 - Raster-Based HRT Analysis in ArcGIS: Data Visualization, Mapping, Simple Topographic Differencing, and Hydrologic Analysis

Registration

Due to a generous contribution from the Utah Professional Geologists Licensing Board, the HRT short course is being held with no registration fee. A USB flash drive will be provided to participants with materials from the short course. However, participants are on their own for breaks and lunches, as they will not be provided.

Two Creeks Coffee is located inside the Browning Building connected to the Sutton (FASB) Building.

The Crimson View Restaurant is located inside the University Union on the fourth floor, west end. The Union is located immediately southeast of the Browning Building.

Transportation and Parking

Visitor parking is available south of the Sutton (FASB) and Browning Buildings. From 100 South, go south on 1455 East just past the parking garage where the street turns to the left, continue and follow to the right around the INSCC Building and turn left into the paid parking lot. Two parking payment kiosks are available around the lot.

The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) TRAX Light Rail Red Line runs to the University of Utah from downtown Salt Lake City. TRAX trains run every 15 minutes weekdays to the airport, downtown, Draper City to the south, and West Valley City and Daybreak to the southwest, including transfer to UTA FrontRunner commuter rail service to Ogden and Provo.
