Join us for part 1 of our 3-part series where we catch up with anthropologists working within and beyond acadmia. Growing up in the university system, we often don't learn about other forms of collaboration and job prospects beyond academia despite our skillset. We connect with anthropologists who have worked in the private and public sectors to learn about their career paths and strategies for applying anthropology, wherever they may be.

In June, we'll be talking with Dr. Jamie Sherman at Netflix:

Dr. Jamie Sherman is a cultural anthropologist (PhD Princeton, 2011) and Senior Researcher at Netflix. Her research background is in techniques and technologies of self-transformation, performance, and dynamics of race, gender, and play. Before joining Netflix in 2021, she worked at Intel Corporation, where she focused on emergent technological practices from quantified self, to live motion capture projection, and content creation practices. Today, her primary research topic is on the use of data models and predictions in decision making processes.

Anthropologists and other social scientists at any and all levels of the career path--students, interns, researchers, consultants, tenure trackers, adjuncts, etc.

What do I need for the Q&A?

Please come with an open mind and lots of questions for Dr. Jamie Sherman. You're welcomed to use the chat as well as ask questions directly to Dr. Sherman during the Q&A portion.

How will the Q&A be organized?

The 1-hour Q&A will be conducted online via Zoom video. RUSH leadership will introduce the guest and ask them a couple of questions about their anthropological backgrounds and where their anthropology interests have taken them. Afterwards, we will open up the discussion by collecting questions written in the chat as well as ask the audience to ask direct questions to the guest.

The Q&A will be recorded for those who cannot make it.

Who is conducting the "Anthropologist @Work" series?

This career development series is organized by the American Anthropological Association's special interest group Research on US Health and Healthcare (RUSH). RUSH is an anthropology group dedicated to fostering research and collaboration on contemporary issues related to health and biomedical healthcare in the U.S. Connect with RUSH on our website or LinkedIN or Facebook.

The Q&A will be hosted and run by Rachel Ceasar, PhD, and Marieke Van Eijk, PhD, the chairs of RUSH.

Rachel is a medical anthropology consultant at Culture of Health+Tech Consulting and a public health researcher at the USC Department of Preventive Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine. Rachel's research uses mixed quantitative-qualitative methods to understand the social construction of substance use among under-studied populations. She is currently leading research on a National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities study on understanding how the social environment impacts women’s use of cannabis during pregnancy.

Marieke is a medical anthropologist at the University of Washington's Department of Anthropology. Her work examines how health care institutions and health insurance structures create health disparities and precarious labor conditions for patients and health workers.
