And the Show Goes On: From Paris to Shanghai
Featuring the world premiere of “Hotel Ritz”, a new jazz / classical hybrid in 12 movements, painting the portraits of events and history makers at the famed Ritz Hotel in Paris during the Second World War. Composer Vince Di Mura and 5-string violist Jing Yang use a cabaret soundscape to tell the stories of Hemingway, Arletty, Coco Chanell, Proust, Lee Miller, Eugene Bullard, and some of the most scandalous players of this historical musical drama. Each movement beckons for discussion, and discussion will be plentiful as composer/pianist and violist write a kind of musical history colloquium that is both entertaining and thought provoking.
A second chapter examines the rich world of Shanghai Jazz in the 1930s. Shanghai, considered to be the Paris of the East, was rich in jazz clubs, forging a tradition both related to and completely apart from the western tradition. The music is rich in beauty, romance, and mystery. A unique musical exploration of the most important era in modern history through the eyes of its music and storytelling.
American Composer & pianist Vince Di Mura and Chinese 5-string Violist Jing Yang perform in a dynamic collaboration of Western and Chinese musical traditions. Both trained in classical music, but with a completely different approach to musical performance. A musical marriage not to be missed.
