Overview
The ANCESTRAL WATER Story
"Ancestral Water"was a Jack Grady O’Neil song written in 1999 for the San Francisco Grady Family Reunion. The Grady’s were an early American California Family that was celebrating it’s 150 years in the Golden State. This song told the story of the family’s Irish emigrant, James Grady, who landed in New Orleans in 1840 & proceeded to San Francisco via Panama, with his pregnant wife in 1849.
Ancestral Waterwas a Jack Grady O’Neil album, released in 2009, that tells the story in music and lyrics of Jack’s Great-great Grandparents who made the life altering move out of Ireland to the American South and then on to Gold Rush California in 1849. Yes, the Grady’s were true 49ers.
Ancestral Waterthen became a band in 2009. Ancestral Water has its seeds in the musical kinship of childhood friends, Tom Pehrson and Jack Grady O’Neil. Over the last 16 years, Jack and co-founder Gerald Turetzky, have led a group of musicians as one of the best Americana bands in the East Bay. Steve Sage included Jack and his band among his DVC Rock, Rhythm & Blues Alumni bands.
Ancestral Water Bandhas evolved to feature the strong vocals of Singer-Songwriter Jack Grady O’Neil and drummer Gerald Turetzky, enriched and rounded out with Barbara Miercke, violin and vocals, Wayne Ditzel, guitars and vocals, George Astin, bass and vocals & Jonathan Korn, mandolin.
Joe Peters
Joe Peters is a self-made, singer-songwriter who has released 19 CDs of original songs since
1998, as well as other compilations of Americana and Celtic music. Joe grew up in the American
Midwest during the 1960s and 70s, and his songs hearken back to a time when the youth of the
planet sought the experience of peace, love and adventure and expressed this search in their
music. Through his own music, Joe has tried to rekindle in others that spark of the seeker of
truth on a spiritual journey that was awakened in him long ago by the songs of introspective
songwriters and recording artists. Prior to embarking on a full-time career in music, Joe earned
three academic degrees, served for two years in the U.S. Peace Corps in Ecuador, conducted
Ph.D. research on national parks in Madagascar, taught natural resources management at Grand
Valley State University, and obtained Fulbright grants for research and teaching in Vietnam and
Cambodia. Joe spent many years studying, traveling and working overseas, returning to the U.S.
in 2006 to care for aging parents. Joe’s nature-based background, study of Eastern philosophies
and scientific bent all inform his songwriting. He is a former president of the Songwriters
Association of Midnorth Indiana (SAMI), and his music has been frequently featured on folk
radio stations around the nation and abroad, both broadcast and online. Joe’s song, Sail
Away won the first Blooming-Tunes songwriting contest in 2009 (Bloomington, Indiana). His
original musical slide show, Root of the Matter, is featured on the website of Catholic Relief
Services, with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
