ALTÆRITY: to alter, to altar.

Transformation as offering. Otherness as illumination.

ALTÆRITY, combining “alter” and “altar,” creates room for artists to express the folds of identities, histories, and spiritualities contained with the “other.” Through two-dimensional and sculptural works, the complex lived experiences of Asian Americans will be examined and opened for dialogue at the First Church of Chicago, a space that had significant Asian American membership in the early 1900s.

ALTÆRITY seeks to reactivate the legacy of Asian Americans in the South Side and to affirm First Presbyterian’s ethos “to be an advocate of self-determination for all oppressed people.” In solidarity with the struggles of “othered” communities in Chicago, the opening reception for ALTÆRITY will also function as a fundraiser for the National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC), a nonprofit based in Chicago that defends the legal rights of immigrants regardless of background.

Tickets for entry to the event will be sold in advance and at the door, and all proceeds will go directly towards the NIJC.
