The Ally Skills Workshop teaches men (in technology) simple, everyday ways to support women in their workplaces and communities. Participants learn techniques that work at the office, at conferences, and online. The skills we teach are relevant everywhere, including skills particularly relevant to open technology and culture communities. At the end of the workshop, participants will feel more confident in speaking up to support women, be more aware of the challenges facing women in their workplaces and communities, and have closer relationships with the other participants.

An "ally" in this context is someone who wants to help a disadvantaged group, but is not a member of that group themselves. This workshop is focused on teaching men - male allies - how to support geek women in their daily lives by taking small, simple actions.

Women also attend the workshop, both to learn techniques and to take part in the discussion, but the scope of the workshop does not include teaching women how to respond to sexism.

FAQs

Is my registration transferrable?

No. Each person who wants to attend must register and their registration is non-transferrable.

I can't make any of these dates. Are there other workshop dates I could attend?

Who developed the workshop curriculum?

The Ada Initiative developed the curriculum and open-sourced it.

Will there be food?

There will be light snacks and non-alcoholic beverages provided by our sponsor (Enova International). Anyone needing a full meal based on the time of day should eat before the event or bring something with them to eat during one of the two 10 minute breaks in the workshop.

What should I bring with me?

Yourself is required. Note-taking is optional so therefore paper and a writing instrument is optional. Electronic device note-taking will not be permitted unless there is an accessibility-related reason pre-approved by the organizer.
