About this event
All Aboard! The Reading Railroad is a weekly, small group reading class, dedicated to improving our learner’s reading and early literacy skills by building vocabulary, learning through stories and creating a culture of love for reading and literacy.
Through engaging children in early literacy activities including playing with sounds and songs, building knowledge of the world we live in and understanding the connection between letters and sounds, young children will be exposed to early reading techniques that will allow them to grow and thrive as future readers.
Each week, learners will:
- Explore new words to enrich and expand their vocabulary.
- Play and learn how language is used as a tool for storytelling, sharing ideas and crafting questions to improve and expand understanding.
- Be introduced to new books that are culturally relevant and explore diversity, differences and inclusion.
- Learn how to sound out new words, use their pointer finger to follow along in stories and explore different types of literature like stories, nonfiction, poetry etc.
- Practice reading comprehension strategies and early literacy skills.
- Have fun and develop a personal love for reading!
Expanding and developing a growing vocabulary will be a foundation of this class each week. We will use sight words, early phonemics and letter sounds and learn a variety of vocabulary words on our various stops on the Reading Railroad!
Each week we will make a different stop along the Reading Railroad and children are encouraged to dress up to go along with the theme, bring their favorite related items for show and tell or simply show up as they are!
