DIVINE REVELATIONS: THE ETERNAL VOICE OF ALICE COLTRANE TURIYASANGITANANDA

A Daylong Celebration of Her Life, Music, and Legacy

Please note: This listing is for the evening live performance by the Sai Anantam Devotional Ensemble and Black Journal screening. To RSVP for the afternoon Ashram and Eternity's Pillar installation click here.

Alice Coltrane Swamini Turiyasangitananda was an artist of boundless talent, creativity, and spiritual calling. Her work as a musician is defined as much by her prowess as a jazz player as it is by her role as leader of the Sai Anantam Ashram community in their practicing of traditional Hindu Bhajan chants. The eternal quality of her work manifested through the music as well as through her volumes of writings, 24 part television series, weekly orations, and general approach to life.

In celebration of her divine 88th birthday, The Coltrane Home, Philosophical Research Society's 7th House Screenings, and dublab present DIVINE REVELATIONS: THE ETERNAL VOICE OF ALICE COLTRANE TURIYASANGITANANDA, as a way to honor this expansive legacy. The daylong program features an immersive Ashram installation with screenings of Eternity’s Pillar, Alice Coltrane Swamini Turiyasangitananda’s television program throughout the afternoon (RSVP here!), and an evening presentation of music and dance from the Sai Anantam Devotional Ensemble lead by Sita Michelle Coltrane, culminating with a screening of the Black Journal’s documentary on Alice Coltrane from 1970.

This program is produced by The Philosophical Research Society, The Coltrane Home, and Ross Chait.

ABOUT MONUMENT ETERNAL FROM DELMONICO BOOKS

This volume unpacks the cultural legacy of musician, spiritual leader, wife and mother Alice Coltrane. Accompanying the eponymous exhibition at Los Angeles’ Hammer Museum, the book takes its title from Coltrane’s 1977 autobiography and devotional text, Monument Eternal, in which she reflected on her newfound spiritual beliefs and the path to healing and self-discovery. Coltrane was "ahead of her time," as her son, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, says: she was "one of the first people to move outside the mainstream, and certainly one of the first female, Black, American jazz musicians to record her own music in her own studio, and to release music on her own terms."

Alice Coltrane, Monument Eternal explores themes including spiritual transcendence, sonic innovation and architectural intimacy. The project juxtaposes works from 19 contemporary American artists with pieces of ephemera from Coltrane’s archive—including handwritten sheet music, unreleased audio recordings and rarely seen footage—to honor her cultural output and practice.
