About this event
- Event lasts 6 hours
Riding On Insulin is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by pro backcountry snowboarder Sean Busby. With the help of our exceptional T1D coaches, we've taught thousands of kids & teens with Type 1 diabetes how to ski & snowboard, surf and mountain bike since 2010. We welcome participants of all ability and experience levels.
First timer? There's no better place to learn how to ride! We provide a safe, fun learning environment and a memorable introduction to skiing or snowboarding for those with Type 1 diabetes and their siblings/friends. All of our coaches either have T1D themselves, or love someone with T1D.
Experienced skier or snowboarder? Campers are grouped together based on age and experience level. More advanced groups spend the day honing their skills with one of our seasoned coaches while exploring the mountain.
When you register for one of our camps, you're signing up for more than a day on the mountain. You're joining a community of people who "get it" — a tight-knit community who knows what it's like to live with Type 1 diabetes every single day. We're pushing the limits of the disease in a safe environment, learning that anything is possible with T1D, and we want you to join us!
What's Included:1. A fun Virtual Orientation
We kick off the weekend with a *LIVE* 45-minute virtual orientation with our families and coaches. We play a few games, answer any questions and hear from our partners about the latest and greatest in insulin pump therapy and CGM technology. We also have a Certified Diabetes and Education Specialist on every call to answer any questions regarding blood sugar management, temp basals, Automated Insulin Delivery systems, etc! There are chances to win prizes thorughout the call to keep all the campers engaged.
2. The Coolest Swag Bag in the Diabetes World
Upon checking in at camp, your camper will receive a drawstring bag with swag, including a 2026 winter camp shirt, keychain, stickers, an enamel pin & items from sponsors. We take pride in our original graphic designs and high quality, durable shirts and hoodies so you can wear them for years to come. If you pre-order a hoodie, beanie or hat when you register, those items will be in your camper's bag at check-in.
3. Epic Camp Day
On camp day, we split into groups of 4-6 campers, which are led by our T1D coaches and volunteers and have names like "Team Shred" and "Team Slin"
A typical schedule for camp is below, but please note, this is an example schedule. You will receive a Welcome Packet with a detailed schedule specific to your camp 3 weeks prior to your camp date!

9:30 AM — Check-in for families with their own gear

Frequently asked questions
All registrations include a $50 nonrefundable deposit. If you cancel 30+ days prior to the event you receive a full refund, minus $50. We generally don't refund within 30 days, unless there are extenuating circumstances, which we review on a case-by-case basis. ROI operates rain, shine, or freezing!
Participants go through the day in groups, which are divided by ability level, ski/ride, and their age. Each group is assigned a coach (many of which who either have experience with T1D or have T1D themselves) and volunteers to guide them throughout the day.
We use an honor-based pricing system, where families can pay what they feel they can afford, or we'll pay for them if need be. We use the tiers to show how expensive it is to run ski camps, and show how donors, sponsors, and fundraisers allow us to have the average family pay Tier 3!
Yes! Our events are open to kids with T1D, as well as their siblings and/or close friends. We believe that diabetes is truly a group/family effort, and we teach those siblings and friends that they have an important role in the life of their T1D loved one!
Absolutely. Lunch is different at each camp, but we always provide a lunch for each child/s specific needs. Please confirm this information in the designated “dietary needs” comment box on the registration form.
ABSOLUTELY. This is a cornerstone of the ROI program. It’s imperative to check often, especially when learning a new sport that deals with altitude, humidity and climate. Kids will be checking their CGMs through “group checks" and reporting those numbers back to medical at home base.
Of course not! If it's their first time, there's no better place to start! Most of our first-time groups are taught by one of our coaches who are PSIA-AASI Level I, II or III certified to instruct. We also partner with resorts and adaptive venters to ensure our first-timers have great instruction.
Yes, there is even something for our more advanced riders. They will be in a group together exploring the mountain with an advanced coach who will test their skills, while still keeping everyone comfortable and safe.
Our goal is to never keep parents from their children at ROI. However, we encourage all parents to allow their kids to be just that -- KIDS! ROI is all about empowering kids with T1D and their siblings, and they get the full camp experience when they are able to go off on their own for the day!
Ages 7-17
Yes! We are unique in that we encourage any siblings (ages 7-17) to register and participate in camp! We know T1D is a family disease and we've heard amazing stories over the years of how a non-T1D sibling taking part in a diabetes camp helps them with understanding their sibling's disease!
