AIFS AI SPEAKER SERIES FOR FOOD & AG

Featuring Emmanouil Koukoumidis, CEO, Oumi PBC

Join the AI Institute for Next Generation Food Systems (AIFS) for a virtual event with Dr. Emmanouil Koukoumidis discussing the efforts that Oumi, alongside 20+ academics, recently started to put us on a better path by betting on and fostering open source frontier AI.

Dr. Koukoumidis believes that open source is the best path to developing the most advanced, trusted, and versatile AI; the AI that would unlock industry applications and truly empower the sciences. Unfortunately though, frontier AI has become over the last 2+ years increasingly closed giving rise to significant concerns and risks.

Learn how Oumi empowers sciences, the industries and even AgTech hackathons! To succeed, broad collaboration is needed across academia, the industry, and across the world.

Emmanouil (Manos) Koukoumidis is the CEO of Oumi PBC focusing on democratizing foundation model research and development. He previously led the science and engineering for Google Cloud’s Natural Language Services while also bootstrapping and leading the Google Cloud GenAI (PaLM/Gemini) efforts across a 300+ v-team covering model quality, Responsible AI, and all related infrastructure from inception all the way to General Availability. He has been working on GenAI systems since 2016 at Microsoft and then Meta. He holds a PhD from Princeton University where he set the early foundations for edge AI and a Diploma from the National Technical University of Athens. His research career includes positions at  MIT, Microsoft Research, SMART (Singapore) and CERN. His research has been featured in top-tier conferences, journals and news articles receiving a Best Paper Award and other distinctions with over 5,000 citations.

This event is being offered in conjunction with the AIFS x Sony AI AgTech Challenge kickoff and will be available virtually to viewers not associated with the Challenge.

The Artificial Intelligence Institute for Next Generation Food Systems, or AIFS, was launched October 1, 2020 to solve the world’s biggest challenges to crop and food production facing our planet: ensuring a sustainable, nutritious, efficient and safe food supply while mitigating the impacts of a changing climate.

The institute has been designed to be inclusive, fostering collaborations to develop open-source AI solutions across the food system. Given food’s fundamental role in human health and well-being, coupled with its far-reaching impacts on the national economy and environment, the institute brings together more than 40 researchers from six institutions: UC Davis, UC Berkeley, Cornell University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, UC Agriculture and Natural Resources, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service.

This work is supported by AFRI Competitive Grant no. 2020-67021-32855/project accession no. 1024262 from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
