Speakers

Julie Wilkinson: Julie has over 3 decades of experience developing and commercializing healthcare products in the medical device and diagnostics industries. She’s launched dozens of FDA-approved medical devices, diagnostic laboratory systems and reagents, point-of-care instruments and tests, and over-the-counter test kits. Her experiences include working with multinational corporations and start-ups, government, and growing her own entrepreneurial endeavors. Her career yardstick is always “science serving humanity,” and as a founder of Sherpani she continues to partner with companies to navigate the hills and valleys of product development to efficiently take an innovative idea through development and approval.

Dr. Caroline Popper: Caroline helps life science companies develop and commercialize new technologies. To do so, she focuses on tools and trends shaping all aspects of health care. She has more than 30 years of hands-on operating experience. Caroline did not set out to be a businessperson. Rather, she became a physician (University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa) and an internist and pathologist (Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore) and thereafter trained in Health Policy and Health Economics at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She has managed a wide spectrum of diagnostics, device, and drug discovery businesses in both Fortune 500 and start-up settings, amongst others, Becton Dickinson, bioMerieux, and MDS. She sits on several private and public company boards. Caroline is the founer of Sherpani where she combines her clinical and business experience to help companies address opportunities in aging, mental health, and women’s health. Believing that the future of healthcare delivery will have an important role for data science, she is particularly interested in the role of humans and machines, working together. Most recently, she completed her JD to understand the role of the legal and regulatory system in the future of AI in healthcare.

Ellington West: Ellington West is the Co-Founder and CEO of Sonavi Labs, a medical device and software company based in Baltimore, MD. She brings over 10 years of experience in healthcare business development, market research and leadership to Sonavi Labs and is overseeing the development of the company's inaugural product line.

Under Ellington’s leadership, Sonavi Labs has grown from a research project into a globally recognized, pioneering health tech company. Since its founding in 2017, Sonavi Labs has raised over $6.5M in funding, received FDA approval for the Feelix® hardware, been awarded 9 patents and Ellington has been named to INC Magazine’s list of the Top 100 Female Founders of 2021 in addition to being named as one of the Cartier Women’s Initiative North American Fellows. She has also been named by the Baltimore Business Journal as an Enterprising Woman of Excellence and the Baltimore Sun as one of the 25 Women to Watch in Healthcare.

Ellington has had numerous successful showings in global competitions, including winning the Health, Tech and Wearables category at SXSW in 2022, and the Early Stage pitch competition at HLTH 2021, among others. Ellington has been asked to speak as an industry leader for the American Telehealth Association, Johnson & Johnson, and National Society of Black Engineers. She also serves as a mentor and advisor to the Consortium for Technology and Innovation in Pediatrics (CTIP), developing content to support portfolio companies. Ellington serves on the board of BetaMore and was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Maryland Life Sciences Advisory Board in 2022.
