About this event

This course is the second half of the AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) course. Students should have successfully completed the Blended Learning HeartCode BLS course prior to taking this Hands-on Skills session. Students must present to the Skills Instructor their certificate of completion of the online portion before beginning the skills portion.

The AHA’s BLS course trains participants to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations and provide early use of an AED. Reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).

The AHA’s BLS Course is designed for healthcare professionals and other personnel who need to know how to perform CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in-facility and prehospital settings.

This course teaches:

  • High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
  • The AHA Chain of Survival, specifically the BLS components
  • Important early use of an AED
  • Effective ventilations using a barrier device
  • Importance of teams in multirescuer resuscitation and performance as an effective team member during multirescuer CPR
  • Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants

How long is the Skills portion of the class?

The skills portion of the class is approximately one and a half hours long.

Is this portion in person or online?

The Skills portion of the AHA BLS Initial Provider course is in person.

Is a text provided?

Students enrolled in this course should have access to the ebook provided to them when the Blended Learning HeartCode BLS course was taken. However, we will have textbooks available should students wish to review. Students do not keep these texts.

Where is this course taught?

The Skills portion is taught on the Modesto Maidique campus of FIU in Academic Health Center 3 on the third floor inside the Diane Ramy Faulconer Simulation Teaching and Research Center.

Will I get an eCard?

Yes, students that successfully complete the Skills portion of the course will receive the eCard provided by the AHA. Students will be sent an email with instructions on how to obtain the card.
