Gateway's after-school program is open to students in grades 1-12.
Program Overview
- Students in grades 1-3 are provided an age-appropriate project-based program that teach them basic computer skills and coding using block based/visual coding platforms; basic engineering using LEGO products, LittleBits, Snap Circuits, and STEM Pathways Lab; and robotics using products such as Sphero Indi, Ozobot EVO, and Bee Bots.
- Students in grades 4 and 5 continue to build upon these skills by advancing to more advanced computer skills with a specific emphasis on shifting from block-based for existing students to coding with Python as well as more advanced engineering projects. Students in this age-group also have the option to participate as part of a First LEGO League Challenge team.
- Students in grades 6-12 continue to progress through their skills development related to computer skills, coding and engineering and have the opportunity to engage in two distinct primary programs. The first of these is FIRST Tech Challenge leveraging FIRST Tech Challenge class pack robotics kits and associated curriculum. Students interested do have the option to participate as part of a competitive FIRST Tech Challenge team. Students in this age group also have the option of engaging in a drone focused program that included participating in a REC Aerial Drone program. Students in both tracks continue to have the opportunity to expand on their Python skills as well as starting to develop skills programming in Java. These programs allow students in grades 6-12 to focus on specific areas that interest them such as engineering design, manufacturing, coding, and operations and doing so as part of a team combining all of these skills to accomplish specific tasks either with drones or with robots that they build and design.
All students in the after-school program are also provided tutoring, as needed, to support their success in the classroom.
