About this event

EVERYONE is invited and welcome to join us on this authentic, enriching and unique trip to learn more about the roots, history, culture, and beauty of the Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic is a beautiful island filled with captivating rhythms, rich history, unspoiled beautiful nature and landscapes, and a rich vibrant Afro-Latin culture. This trip will be your gateway to an authentic Dominican experience, with beautiful memories that will last you a lifetime.

Dominican Republic is considered to be one of the African Diaspora countries because African slaves were also taken there during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. The Dominican Republic is the first home of Africans in the Americas. It’s also the first country where the first African slave revolt took place. The slave revolt was led by an African slave from Congo named Sebastian Lemba. The Dominican government has acknowledged that a majority of Dominicans have dominant African genes and heritage. There is an undeniable visible African heritage and presence in the Dominican Republic through its culture, people and way of life.

This trip will take you to some of the places in the Dominican Republic with the strongest African heritage, history and presence. The places that we will visit are:

  • Santo Domingo (above image) is a vibrant and historic city with a rich cultural heritage. It has a significant African diaspora history because it was the first location in the Americas to receive African slaves. Its cultural landscape reflects the lasting impact of this crucial history.
  • San Pedro de Macoris (above image) has a strong African heritage due to its descendants of Anglophone Caribbean immigrants. It is also the birthplace of merengue and bachata. It is well known for producing the highest rate of Dominican baseball players, per capita.

La Romana (above image) has notable African heritage due to its history as a major sugar-producing area where African slaves were brought to work.

Samana (above image) is home to a unique community of African Americans (black Americans) called “Samana Americans” or “Los Americanos de Samana.” They are descendants of freed slaves who arrived in the early 1800s.
