About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour

Topics discussed will include, but are not limited to:

Invasive plants removal

We will be discussing a handful of invasive plants, including, but not limited to:

  1. mother of millions
  2. Russion thistle
  3. Arundo donax
  4. wild tarot

This plants all cause problems in Nassau County. For example:

Infestations of mother of millions (Kalanchoe x houghtonii) cause harm to coastal ecosystems by reproducing at a much faster rate than surrounding native plants using “pups” that grow from the side of each leaf. Wildlife don’t eat the plant, and its morphology is not very conducive to shelter. Roots tend to be shallow and are not helpful with sand stabilization. Therefore, mother of millions (Kalanchoe x houghtonii) has shown very little benefit to wildlife or dune health and is, in fact, displacing native plants that do have benefit, leading scientists to conclude that this non-native plant is ecologically harmful, or invasive.

If left unchecked, this succulent grows so rapidly that it can take over an area within weeks, preventing beneficial plants from thriving and reducing food and shelter for wildlife. Over time, the area becomes a monoculture (carpet of Kalanchoe plants) and reduces surrounding property value.
