Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO®) is an evidence-based, interprofessional, and multidisciplinary training program that equips the entire maternity care team with skills to effectively manage obstetric emergencies. This comprehensive course encourages a standardized team-based approach amongst physicians, residents, nurse midwives, registered nurses and other members of the maternity care team to improve patient safety and positively impact maternal outcomes.


Cost is $250, this includes the online portion and the hands on workshop. This is at a huge discount, additional donations to the instructor are appreciated. Payments may be made by Paypal (friends and family please) or through eventbrite. Cash payments may also be made in advance. Payments are non-refundable. Due to the nature of the blended course with the online portion, we cannot accept payment the day of the course.This class will be a potluck; please bring a covered dish to share. Babies under 1 year are welcome if there is someone to care for them in our waiting room. Please wear comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement. The course will be held at Breath of Life Midwifery located at 117 Sheraton Dr. Salem, VA 24153. An educational program designed to enhance cognitive and procedural skills of health care professionals to help them manage obstetrical emergencies.
This course is directed primarily toward maternity care providers including physicians, nurses, and certified nurse midwives.

1. Discuss methods of managing pregnancy and birth urgencies and emergencies, which standardizes the skills of practicing maternity care providers.
2. Demonstrate content and skill acquisition as evidenced by successful completion of online course examination, skills workstations, and group testing stations.
Detailed educational objectives are listed at the beginning of each ALSO Provider Manual chapter.

Blended Classroom ALSO Provider Course
Online Portion of the Course
Registrants will be provided an email with a link to the Online Portion of the ALSO Provider Course. Content consists of a pre-test; recorded lectures; online case studies; recorded workstation demonstrations; post-test and course evaluation. Upon completion of the evaluation and claiming of credit, the letter of participation will be accessible electronically. This letter must be provided to the course sponsor as proof of successful completion prior to participation in the Live Portion of the course.

7:45-8:00 Debrief and Review of Online Education (15 min)

8:00-8:30 Lecture: Safety in Maternity Care (30 min)

(Required 1st presentation of the Live course)

Workstation Rotation (Learners are each assigned to a group and rotate amongst skills workstations simultaneously)

8:30-9:45 Workstation 1: Shoulder Dystocia and

Workstation 2: Emergency Breech Delivery (75 min)

9:45-10:00 Break (15 min)

10:00-11:15 Workstation 3: Assisted Vaginal Delivery (75 min)

11:15-12:30 Workstation 4: Maternal Resuscitation (75 min)

12:30-1:00 Lunch (30 min)

1:00-2:15 Workstation 5: Postpartum Hemorrhage (75 min)

2:15-3:30 Interactive Case Studies: (75 min) (Learners are equally divided into different groups, with a maximum of 12 in one group for the case study session)

3:30-3:45 Break (15 min)

3:45-5:00 Group Testing: (75 min) (One team as assigned above goes together to a breakout rooms with a max of 6 people in a group)

5:00-5:30 Wrap-Up, Questions, Course Evaluations (30 min)

At the completion of this course and upon receipt of the sponsor’s post-course materials, ALSO staff will create letters of participation for all learners. Wallet cards will be included on the letters for those who successfully complete both online post- test and hands-on skill workstations (scoring at least 80% on each). These letters will be distributed to learners by the course sponsor.

Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM)
The AAFP is proud to be a Core Partner with the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health Program and provide AAFP representation on the AIM Safety Council. AIM seeks to improve maternity care by establishing patient safety and quality improvement programs through the utilization of AIM Safety Council developed tools and resources. AIM encourages state and hospital quality improvement (QI) teams to align on the national, state, and hospital level in an effort to improve overall maternal health outcomes in the United States.

The Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics Program contains AIM supported educational content (specifically related to obstetric hemorrhage and severe hypertension in pregnancy and more), that can be customized to assist organizations with implementation of the AIM Patient Safety Bundles. More information about how ALSO content can be customized to specifically meet the AIM Patient Safety Bundle requirements can be obtained by emailing the ALSO Program Manager, Robyn Brumble at rbrumble@aafp.org.

Maintenance of Certification (MOC)
The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) MOC standards now allow participation in ABOG-approved Simulation Courses to meet the annual Improvement in Medical Practice (Part IV) MOC requirement. Both the ALSO Provider Course and the ALSO Instructor course have been approved to meet ABOG Improvement in Medical Practice requirements for 2016-2018.

Continuing Nursing Education
The American Academy of Family Physicians is approved as a provider of continuing nursing education by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. This course offering is approved for nursing contact hours applicable for APRN, RN, LPN, or LMHT relicensure. This is an advanced level course and may not be suitable for all general continuing nursing education.
